MONIKERS | "WAKE UP" LP | Colored Vinyl Release: 2008 by: Kiss Of Death Records Review: February 13th, 2009 |

Monikers from Orlando plays straight up mid-tempo punk rock, and if you ask me do they do it damn good. This was an instant classic for me and has been spinning on my player pretty much all the time since I got it a few weeks back. "Wake Up" is a 12-song lesson in what punk rock should be about. It's catchy as hell and got a ton of simple, still awesome, riffs that are gonna make you dance. It's basically punk rock as its finest. Singer Ryan Seagrist's harsh voice, comparable to Berlin's Radio Dead Ones, fits the music perfectly. Does it sound interesting? My guess is that Monikers should be appealing to fans of Jawbreaker and Kiss Of Death bands over all. Why not give it a try?
All the way from the opening tune "80 Proof" to the final, acoustic, "Black" Monikers gets it right. I just love everything about it and I find it hard to mention any high-points of this album since, in my opinion, the whole record is a peak in modern punk rock. But, my absolute favorites are "Them and Us" and "Absentees". Both are down-tempo tunes, the latter with an awesome riff that you'll find yourself humming all day after listening to it. Just the mere sight of this record's cover should get your attention. If you don't think it looks absolutely awesome you're stupid and got bad taste in record-cover artwork. Don't like Monikers? Well, then you got bad taste in music as well. / Christer Davidsson, MUTINYZINE.COM |
