MARIO MATTEOLI | "GOLDEN STATE" CD Release: 2008 by: Self-Released Review: Jan. 9th, 2009 |

The second solo-album from ex- Weary Boys vocalist Mario Matteoli goes on in the same tradition as its precursor. Traditional folk tunes with a touch of country. I think it's a bit more well-crafted than the first record though. Seems like Matteoli spent some more time on this one both writing it and recording it. It's got a little cleaner touch to it and more atmosphere since there's instruments like mellotron, organs and trombone involved this time. The mellow country tune "Best Friend" and the more up-tempo "Nothing Like You" are the catchiest ones. I also really dig the beutiful "What People Say (I Don't Care)" or the last song "Ines' Lullaby" which, in my opinion, puts Matteoli right in the same league as folk music greats Gillian Welch and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy.
If you liked Mario's first album or anything by the Weary Boys you will most definitely like this album. If you've never heard of this guy I suggest you look him up if you want to hear a great a voice and fantastic songwriting. "Golden State" is a must have for anyone with a soft spot for mellow alternative folk, pop or country. / Christer Davidsson, MUTINYZINE.COM |
