VIRGINS | "MISCARRIAGE"
LP | Colored Vinyl
Release: 2008 by: Kiss Of Death
Review: Jan. 9th, 2009

Virgins from Orlando, FL is the new band of Sam Johnson who used to sing in New Mexican Disaster Squad. Completed by a guy named Phil Longo on bass and Eric Pitman of Polluted Youth behind the drums Virgins play rough-sounding punk/hardcore clearly influenced by the early eighties. Lyrically the album is political aware from a personal point of view and without being too in your face.

"Miscarriage" might take a few spins to be fully enjoyed since it's a bit more gritty than the earlier works of the members. But once you've listened to the record a few times you'll find that it's nothing but brilliant. Elements of both NMDS and PY are present throughout the album in a cool way and without being too obvious. Don't look at Virgins as a weak attempt to fill the void of NMDS - this is a new band with a lot of potential.

I really like the sound of "Miscarriage" and the fact that it's a bit rough around the edges is what makes it charming. As far as I can tell there's been no lame overdubs here. After all that's what punk is all about, playing music as it is, without ruining it with hundreds of re-takes until everyting is 100% "perfect". Leave that stuff to those who don't know better. Virgins is a three-piece band and you'll hear it.

Out of the ten songs my favorites are "White Night" and "WWZD" which both have really cool guitar parts in the verses. But the truth is that all songs are really good. Over all I hold "Miscarriage" as one of last year's best albums.
