It doesn't take more than a minute into this record to realize that The Measure (SA) has outdone themselves, again. In my opinion this band takes a step forward with every release they put out, which basically means that they've taken quite a few steps ahead since the start. I have stopped counting but roughly it's up to about 14 releases since I discovered them a couple of years ago. Their first 7-inch "Union Pool" got me hooked right away and since then I've just fallen more and more in love with this band every week. It has actually gone so far I hold them one of my absolute favorite bands of today.
So what's so cool about their new(ish) 12-inch. Well first of all it sounds like the band has grown together as a unit in a way that I haven't heard them before. There's a huge difference in how they play on this one. It's tighter than ever and everyone has found their place. To be perfectly honest the early recordings of The Measure are actually pretty bad played. Don't get this wrong, that's a part of why I like them so much. The raw honesty is what got me into this band to start with. Anyway, these new tunes are so much better performed which brings the band to a totally new level. I guess the fact that Mikey and Fid have traded instruments has quite a bit to do with it. Both the drumming and the guitar sounds so much better.
From the very first chord of "Drunk by Noon" to the last note of "Practice Jam" this record is proof of how damn awesome this band is. "How To Steal a Million", a guitar and vocals only tune, slows things down a bit about half way into the record and works as a great pause before "Singles Series Number Zero" picks up the beat again. I don't know what else to say. I just love it!!
