Review: March 28th, 2009

I've been finding out about some awesome singer/songwriters lately and Jon Snodgrass is one of 'em. Some of you might already know Snodgrass from alt-country band Drag The River or maybe even his earlier group Armchair Martian. I think Visitor's Band is Jon's first solo full-length but I'm not a 100 % sure. What I am 100 % sure of is that it's an amazing album. Something about Snodgrass' hoarse, gentle voice and the laid back feel of the opening track "Brave with Strangers" made me fall for this record instantly and I've been listening to it a lot this past week. There's a good mix of slow laid back tunes and rockier gems on Visitor's Band and at times I think of Lucero, but not quite as rough. Over all I would say that it's a warm record perfectly for putting on as you come home from a hard day's work. Put on the beautiful "Song for Jake Nichols to Sing" and lie down on the couch, it will calm you down for sure. Or, bring a couple of good friends over, and play "Fast In Last" as you all pop a beer open and chill out on the dusty front porch watching the sun set behind the treetops.
